If you read this, if your eyes are passing over this right now, (even if we don't speak often or ever) please post a comment with a COMPLETELY MADE UP AND FICTIONAL memory of you and me. It can be anything you want - good or bad - BUT IT HAS TO BE FAKE. When you're finished, post this in your LJ and see what your friends come up with. |

I drink a lot of water- over a gallon a day. However I only drink distilled water so I buy gallon jugs at the grocery store. It is terrible for the environment and I keep saying that I'll stop but I don't. |

A Chinese shopkeeper, Yu Ming, hates his life and upon a whim and a spin of the globe, decides to live in Ireland. To prepare, he learns that the official language in Ireland is Gaelic and spend six months studying it only to arrive in Ireland and find that no one understands him. Beautiful film with a happy ending. </div> And Nude is a tasteful visual essay on how we view nudity; ironically, there is no actual nudity. |

Doctor Who. I can have the crappy of craptastic days and I'll watch a few episodes of Doctor Who and suddenly, the world is a little bit better.
Take for instance, today. Not that great. Not terrible but trying and frustrating and really difficult. This continued after school and then when I went to the gym.
Finally, I get home and decide, screw it. I'm watching DOCTOR WHO. And I do.
"The Planet of the Dead" Easter Special is briliant. Like most episodes, I'm filled with possiblities. That no matter how difficult the world becomes, there is a chance to make it a tiny bit better. Not with guns or violence but by caring for those around you and doing what you can (no matter how small) to help out.
He might be a fictional character but what is fiction but a dream? And what is a dream but unrealized potential? For me, the Doctor represents everything good, everything wonderful, everything we can do...if we try. |

Today was a rainy, dreary day. I woke up to the pitter-patter sound of rain and did NOT feel like getting out of bed. All day, I wished for a nap. I'm a naturally lazy person. Some people need to be on the move; they need to go for a walk/ hike or garden. Me? Give me comfy clothes and a soft area, I'm great. I even have different napping locations for different types of naps. The "I'm too tired to actually make it to my bed I'll just fall asleep here and get up in time for bed' nap is my living room sofa. The "I have an hour and want deep unconsciousness" nap? Office futon. The "lazy random morning lie-in"? Bed, with my snuggly comforter. I love going under in slumber and the slow rise to consciousness. Naps make me happy.

Happy Thing #3: Long drives. When I'm not in gridlock, I love long drives because I can just drive long stretches and listen to tunes. A great place to think.
Happy Thing #4: Clever sayings. I've been known to follow a car to read a bumper sticker. I spend waaaaaaaaay too much time reading the "funny' shoebox cards. Today, I giggled when I saw a vanity plate that was "YIPIKIYA" (of which I added 'motherf*cker'). Driving to OH, I saw a "WE DID IT" on a jeep that had OBAMA stickers all over it. Okay, so what else? Oh, yeah, I'm starting to plan a summer road trip. Birthday party? I planned and it was awesome. Spring break? No, plan and it sucked.
Lesson?
Plan for vacations.
So this summer, I am thinking road trip. But I want to hike and camp. I have done neither and don't know what you need or what to bring or what to do.
Anyone rec any good books? Sites? Share experiences?

Since I'm with family, I couldn't get on last night to make the post but here it is: Fresh Spring Air. Seriously, I hate winter for a variety of reasons but one of the main ones is that I can't keep my windows open to get some fresh air. And when I go outside, the air is mostly ice that freeze my nose and lungs. But spring has fresh air. The air that has a snap to it. The air that makes you feel energized. The air that is full with possibilities, of this can be done! I love the smell and taste of fresh air. I loved that yesterday I was able to go on a walk with my aunt and uncle and cousins and breathe it in. I love that I could drive those 350 miles with my back windows down. Fresh spring air makes me happy. |

1. Post about something that made you happy today, even if it's just a small thing. 2. Do this every day for eight days. 3. Tag eight of your friends to do the same.
Happy thing #1 Today, I walked a full mile without my knee bothering me. I might actually walk and run again. Just need to keep stretching. Until then elliptical machine shall be my bestest friend.

Struggling with the question of what does it mean to be an adult?American Heritage Dictionary defines it as : a·dult <a href="http://dictionary.reference.com/audio.html/ahd4WAV/A0100600/adult" target="_blank"><img src="http://cache.lexico.com/g/d/speaker.gif" border="0" /></ n. - One who has attained maturity or legal age.
- Biology A fully grown, mature organism.
adj. - Fully developed and mature.
- Relating to, intended for, or befitting adults: adult education.
- Containing or dealing in explicitly sexual material; pornographic: adult movies; adult bookstores.
|
But what the hell does that mean? Are you an adult when you get a job? Move out of your parents' home? Live on your own? Pay a mortgage? Have children? What? |
 |
|
Yes. That doesn't mean forgetting what was done but sometimes, realizing that we all screw up. Put the violation or mistake into the context of who that person - is that one transgression who she or he really is? Sometimes you have to give someone a second chance to give yourself a chance to forgive; forgiveness is a blessing and gift for the giver than the one who receives. |

I'm disgusted by the A.I.G. bonuses. I am angry at the lack of over sight. Americans own, what? 80% of the company? Then why can't we stop the distribution of the bail out funds? I'm frustrated with my government. However, Obama still has my respect. I don't agree with how the federal government is handling this specific mess but I applaud his comments. He took responsibility. Read " Obama Stands By Geithner, Says "The Buck Stops With Me." My favorite line: "Ultimately I'm responsible, I'm the president of the United States." The article goes on to say: "We've got a big mess that we're having to clean up. Nobody here drafted those contracts. Nobody here was responsible for supervising AIG and allowing themselves to put the economy at risk by some of the outrageous behavior that they were engaged in. We are responsible, though. The buck stops with me. And my goal is to make sure that we never put ourselves in this kind of position again." Moreover he is standing by his Treasury Secretary. He's not passing the buck. A president that takes responsibility? Unlike Cheney: Don't blame Bush team for economic woes, or Cheney: Bush Administration Not To Blame For Economic Crisis. Shall I even mention Bush's DENIAL of the current economic crisis? For over a YEAR?No, Obama has my respect and my continued support. I might not agree with him on all the issues but I can not find fault with how he handles it. |

When Alex Flinn came to visit, she gave an excellent example of how to look at plot. I thought I would share it. And to help make her point, she used two very popular texts, the film The Wizard of Oz, and the show, House, M.D.What do you think? Inciting Incident - What makes this day special? Begin with action and situation. - [Oz: Tornado]
- [House: guy spits blood and passes out]
We're Really In This - Characters commit to course of action - [Oz: Dorothy follows the YBR]
- [House: House decides to actually take the case]
A Setback - A problem arises that challenges the protagonist - [Oz: Dorothy and company fall asleep in poppy field]
- [House: House realizes it isn't lupus or his course of treatment doesn't work]
Up the Stakes - Characters encounter risk that challenges their commitment - [Oz: Wizard tells Dorothy to "Bring me the broom!"]
- [House: Patient is going into complete organ failure and Cuddy is calling the lawyers]
Climax - The most exciting part as the characters confront their situations/ conflicts - [Oz: Dorothy confronts the Wicked Witch and we hear "I'm melting"]
- [House: House eats a cheese sandwich and sees a red vase and Blamo! knows the disease and starts the right treatment]
Resolution - We find the outcome of the characters and usually see that all is well. - [Oz: Dorothy clicks her heels and realizes 'There is no place like home' and goes home to appreciate all that she has]
- [House: Patient X goes home to family, alive and well]
Yes, there are variations on this but overall, I found this a handy device to help my students understand how to tell a story as so many of them start with description.
Ex: The halls of the city are crumbling. In the north wall the ivy chips away block by block, brick by brick. The south wall is slowly being eaten by the rushing river. The winds of the east slowly wear away the structure a grain at a time. The road is paved.... Seriously, tell me what is going on! What is the point of this? Get to the damn story! Now I have a structure to help them see that. |
